Silence is good for the wise

The past two days a crazy item has been all over the news.

Someone announced that despite explicit requests from the Lapid family, at the funeral of Tommy Lapid the chevra kadisha clandestinely pulled together a minyan in the room with Tommy's body and quickly said kaddish.

This happened 8 years ago. I have no idea why they are talking about it now and why whomever broke the silence chose to do so now.

I do not know the halachic issues and am not offering a halachic opinion. All I feel the need to say is that the gemara says "יפה שתיקה לחכמים, קל וחומר לטיפשים" silence is good for wise people, and how much more so for fools.

Even if they were halachically correct for saying it, and even if they did a good thing for the neshama of Tommy Lapid, why talk about it publicly just to upset the family? And not just upsetting the family, but it can easily be turned to upset the public. You did something "on the sly", and you consider it a good thing - take comfort in the fact that you did it - there is no need to talk about it 8 years later like a schoolchild excited over getting away with a schoolyard prank without getting caught.

  1. Isn't this like the Xians who do communion on Jews killed in the Shoah?
